6-daagse opleiding

DAG 5 – 28/02/12

How to obtain certification

Candidates must pass exams on all five modules to receive CPIM designation. Only the Basics module leads to a separate module certificate. 4 exam sessions will be organized in 2012. The PICS office will register all applicants to each separate module exam on demand.

Preparation courses

PICS offers preparation courses on CPIM certification and certified participants. The preparation courses follow the structure of the CPIM Modules and are adapted to the timing of the international exams.
Applicants can choose between 2 different training formulas:

IN-DEPTH PREPARATION COURSE
• This course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills in the field of production and inventory management for individuals who have little background.
• The course consists of 5 sessions per module. The instructor presents the official APICS study material in detail. Most attention is given to the most difficult topics. Exercises are made and sample exam questions are discussed.

EXAM TRAINING
• This course is designed to provide an intense review of the certification topics for individuals who already possess basic knowledge.

2 days course- Process Excellence and Six Sigma

23 & 30/05/12

- Prerequisites: CPIM certified or equivalent knowledge
• DMAIC project methodology
• Process flow mapping
• Cause and Effect analysis
In this course we explore Six Sigma in more detail. Starting with the structured approach we will guide you through the 5 basic steps in Six Sigma: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC). We explore different tools which we can use in the different phases of the DMAIC method. Popular tools are Process flow mapping, Fishbone diagram, FMEA, Cause and effect diagram and much more. The different tools will be
explained and more important, they will be placed in the right sequence. In this module we also combining the statistical approach combined with practical experience and give you some tips to start implementing (or improve) Six Sigma in your own company.

This course provides you with the necessary insight and tools to detect where you can make the biggest leap forward in your operations and supply chain. The lean and six sigma approach has been assimilated over the last decades to enable you to detect opportunities and transform them into real improvements, as fast and as effective as possible. During the program you will learn about the tool set, the roadmap and philosophy. In this course we explore Six Sigma in more detail. Starting with the structured approach we will guide you through the 5 basic steps in Six Sigma: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC). We explore different tools which we can use in the different phases of the DMAIC method. Popular tools are Gage R&R, Process flow mapping, Process Capability analysis, Fishbone diagram, FMEA, Cause and effect diagram, ANOVA and much more. The different tools will be explained and more important, they will be placed in the right sequence. In this module we also combine the statistical approach with practical experience and give you some tips to start implementing (or improve) Six Sigma in your own company.

‘LIFE IS A SCHOOL OF PROBABILITY’ – Walter Bagehot

• DMAIC
The most commonly used six sigma roadmap will be demonstrated: Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control. The strength of these logical steps prove to be extremely useful in executing projects both for individuals frequently involved in project work as for individuals less at ease in a project environment. One of the main objectives is to transfer this logic to the participants.

• Process flow mapping
Not merely process mapping will be addressed but also how you can add value to your process map by adding important information like cycle time, batch size,… Examples of these process and value stream maps will be provided and discussed.

• Process Capability analysis
How well does your process answer the requirements of your customers? This tool will help you identify your current process performance, typical for a six sigma environment.

• Tools: Fishbone, FMEA, Cause and effect diagram
In the Improve phase is a crucial phase to bring your project to a successful end. Tools like a fishbone diagram or Ishikawa, FMEA or Cause and effect diagrams can help you identify where the improvement opportunities can be found.

• Six Sigma and statistics
Typical in six sigma is the pragmatic use of statistics to prove relationships between variables and help to define improvement actions. Have you ever wondered whether a certain warehouse or production shift really outperforms the others? We will show you how to collect the hard, statistical evidence, required for to create the buy-in in the improvement phase, in a very pragmatic manner.

• Lean Physics
Lean Physics tries to underpin many common sense ideas which arise in the lean and six sigma spectrum. Academic research pointed out that the ‘level of lean’ can be quantified and underscored with hard numbers, if the appropriate modeling effort is undertaken. Moreover, we can illustrate this with examples from lean physics projects conducted in various industries, including services and non-profit organizations.

• Lean implementation in a SME – practical case

Cost and service improvements force organizations to set up collaborations with customers and suppliers. We will tackle this subject by first working on the inventory deployment and distribution network management: where do we place which stock based on sales anticipation and how do we manage capacity in a distribution network. Capacity topics touched are warehousing, transportation and stock financing. Further we will work on the collaboration aspects: horizontal and vertical collaboration with customers and suppliers as well as with colleagues delivering common markets. Topics touched are VMI, CPFR, pooling, etc. Based on this knowledge we will focus on performance measurement in distribution and distribution cost evaluation, linked to improvement projects and improvement focus. Distribution network (re)design is detailed as one of the improvement and evaluation topics in distribution.

In this course we will introduce major concepts of modern distribution and supply chain management. Keys words in modern logistics are cost reduction, service improvement and flexibility maximization. To balance these three pre-requisites we must understand how logistics networks behave when taking certain decisions on inventory locations and inventory levels, network capacity and in making operational choices and choosing technological support. We will learn that cost and service improvements force organizations to set up collaborations with customers and suppliers.

• Inventory deployment
Service is largely dependent on stock availability and time needed to move this stock to the customer. We will introduce techniques on how to deploy inventory in a distribution network : where do we place which stock, based on sales anticipation ; how do we manage capacity in a distribution network, which are the drivers to base decisions upon.

• Capacity management
Capacity topics touched are warehousing, transportation and stock financing. Can we improve capacity, cost en service by working in real time ? And how do we optimize transportation? Accent is also on logistics in our region: how is this done, what should we focus on.

• Collaboration
Further we will work on the collaboration aspects: horizontal and vertical collaboration with customers and suppliers as well as with colleagues delivering common markets. Topics touched are VMI, CPFR, pooling, etc. What at the benefits of collaboration and which efforts and parties are required in such a project are questions that will be answered during this course.

• Performance measurement and cost evaluation
For cost reductions it is important to be able to measure and evaluate logistics performances and costs. But first one must be able to understand the cost drivers and the links between them. Benchmarking the results is key, certainly when linked to improvement projects and finding the right opportunities.

• Distribution network design
Distribution network (re)design is detailed as one of the improvement and evaluation topics in distribution. Setting up the right network for the business helps reducing costs and maximize service and flexibility. In the systems approach all processes and relevant costs are linked to each other. The approach will proof to be valuable when optimizing the (distribution) network and making the right choice.

Sustainablity, green, de-carbonization,… Every company is confronted with these terms. But how to cope in a creative way?

Many companies took the necessary steps to reduce their CO2 emission. In many cases this also seems to be an economic improvement as the easiest and most efficient way to reduce CO2 is eliminating waste. For example by driving less empty kilometers, bundle more, better collaborations etc. But there’s more that can be done…

Program

13.00 Welcome

13.30 Lean and green: an introduction, Prof. Cathy Macharis – Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Onderzoeksgroep MOBI
Sustainable logistics can go hand in hand with lower costs. In this introduction diff erent possibilities of lean and green solutions are introduced.

13.45 A Modal Shift to intermodal transport: green and lean, Dries Meers – researcher VUB, Onderzoeksgroep MOBI, Steunpunt Mobilo
European, national and regional policies in the European Union try to accommodate a modal shift from road freight transport to more sustainable transport modes such as rail, inland waterway and short sea shipping. A modal shift can reduce road congestion and increase the accessibility of
the European market. It also reduces the negative impact of transport on local environment and global climate. In this presentation, we illustrate that there are also tangible gains for companies switching to more sustainable transport modes. A website developed to stimulate intermodal transport in the province of Flemish Brabant, demonstrates how intermodal transport can include a cost advantage for local companies.

Case Ricoh – Sustainable transport: network and cost compliant. Mia Craeghs, Manager European Transport
This presentation provides a real case example how Ricoh has matched sustainability with logistics network optimization to be more cost attractive.

Horizontal collaboration – towards a new paradigm? Erik van Agtmaal, Managing Partner – Altimedes Consulting
There is growing awareness that more horizontal collaboration is required to transform our transport and logistics system to become more sustainable. New business models and services have been developed to enable voluntary horizontal collaboration. This presentation provides an answer to the following questions:

• What triggered horizontal collaboration in a number of bundling initiatives?
• What are the barriers, success factors and benefits of horizontal collaboration?
• What is the role of Logistics Service Providers and other “orchestrators”?
• Should public authorities play a more active role to promote and facilitate horizontal collaboration?

15.00 Break

15.30 Electric and hybrid trucks in intermodal freight transport, Kenneth Lebeau – researcher VUB, Onderzoeksgroep MOBI
One of the possible solutions towards cleaner freight transportation is the inclusion of clean vehicle technologies. Here, electric and hybrid trucks can play an interesting role. Their external costs are lower than the conventional diesel alternatives. In this presentation, the feasibility of incorporating electric and hybrid trucks in a real-life logistics setting will be elaborated.

Case Hasselt CityDepot – Bob Van Steenweghen – Head of Strategic Sales & Marketing, H.Essers
Lean & Green are DNA-requirements for a contemporary logistic service provider. For a partner of the future, the genes for sustainability and pro-activity need to be incorporated as well. Not as a mandatory coat of varnish, but in a wider signifi cance of absolute reliability, openness, structured and certifi ed environmental approach. Pro-activity as in thinking, searching for individual and synergistic optimizations, as well as in leading technology and services portfolio. Bundling streams is one out of many exponents, and city distribution a particular relevant application. In Hasselt, H.Essers is co-initiator of instantiation of city distribution.

Sustainable mobility: leveraging internal pilots for our customers. Dirk De Groof, Business Development Manager M&S – Electrabel
Since 2008 Electrabel GDF SUEZ launched its plan ‘Together for less CO2 ‘ entailing 10 commitments. With regard to mobility Electrabel fi rst wants to stimulate electrical and natural gas vehicles and has developed a complementary off er for its customers and secondly she wants to reduce CO2
emissions related to the trips of her employees proposing innovative solutions and increasing their well being. The case speech will deep dive in concrete solutions for electric, CNG and LNG driven transport means for diff erent needs (milk run trips, company cars, pool fl eet with reservation system, first and last mile solutions, long distance transport etc.).

Meeting Customer Demand for Green Services. Wil Matthijsen, Benelux Coordinator GoGreen program and Alessandro Santangelo, Business Development Intermodal, DHL.
Deutsche Post DHL has developed an environmental program called GoGreen. During the presentation we will elaborate on the specifics of the program including Carbon Footprint Report, Carbon Off setting, Carbon Dashboard, and an overview on the Intermodal solutions will be provided.

17.30 Panel Debate chaired by Prof Cathy Macharis, VUB

18.00 Network cocktail

How to gain your Certified in Supply Chain Management certificate
It is mandatory to take the fundamentals course, at least one module and present a case.
The fundamentals are taught in Dutch and French. The modules are given in English.
The 5-days Fundamentals course are open to everyone. The modules require having followed the fundamentals course or obtained the CPIM certificate.

Fundamentals Course

• 5 day training with no prerequisites

Course summary:
The Fundamentals course presents the core concepts of operations and supply chain management. It introduces the major tools to improve the performance of all operations processes along the entire supply chain. The attention goes to the distinct processes governing the flow of goods and the flow of information: planning, sourcing, production and distribution, and its interaction with other functional departments (sales and finance) and with suppliers and customers. Different key operational dimensions are analyzed such as inventory management, capacity management and flow time management. We study the effect of variability on process performance and the managerial levers for planning and control. All this needs to be evaluated on an economic and financial level (e.g. profitability or Return on Invested Capital). Our objective is to show how managers can design and control their operations to improve the performance of any business process and we formulate implications for managerial actions to enhance both operational and financial performance.

Course content description:
Day 1: Supply Chain Fundamentals – 14/03/2012
In order to strengthen the competitive position of your organization, it is key to manage the flow of goods and information throughout the entire supply chain. In this module we present the supply chain fundamentals: the characteristics of the flows, their integration and the terms for continuous improvement. We introduce the fundamental process measures that affect the operational and supply chain performance. These elements will serve as structure of the course. The relation between throughput, inventory and lead time (feature for every process inside the company) is analyzed and the impact of process improvements on financial aspects will be addressed. We focus on the dynamics that supply chains faces when dealing with customers (and customers’ customers) on the one hand, and suppliers (and suppliers’ suppliers) on the other. We highlight potential problems, their causes, and formulate managerial implications to improve supply chain management. This is illustrated
with a simulation game.

Day 2: Inventory Management & Forecasting – 21/03/2012
For most of the companies and sectors, the forecasting of the demand of the market is the starting element for a vast range of processes in the supply chain. A good forecast significantly reduces uncertainty and allows to also significantly reducing buffers. Inventory Management: even though expensive and in need of drastic reduction, stock stays a necessary evil. In this session techniques will be presented to determine inventory parameters. EOQ’s, safety stock, re-order point … and the influencing parameters in the different environments will be discussed.

Day 3: Integrated Planning & ERP – 28/03/2012
We address the essentials of managing the physical and informational flows in any operations system. Focus is on the way an ERP (integratedplanning) system works in order to balance the resources with the (expected) demand. Planning needs to define the future needs for necessary resources (staff, buildings, machines, materials, cash,…). The basic hierarchical approach of planning supposes definition of resources and their level of use and needs to answer the basic questions for any element in the chain: what, how much and when to deliver, to make, to procure?
An ERP simulation exercise is used to demonstrate the general planning concepts (SOP, Master Plan, Materials management, Capacity management, Scheduling and Sequencing, Sourcing, Operations Control) using a didactic ERP software. This will be the starting point to discover the role of such systems, their possibilities and limits in the context of a dynamic company with its complexity and uncertainty.

Day 4: Lead Time and Capacity Management – 18/04/2012
This session provides insight in the prime determinants of lead times and capacity management. The theory of constraints is developed to enable organisations to improve information or product flows in a service or manufacturing context. Bottlenecks can be related to resources, but also due to organizational inefficiencies or even market demand. This bottleneck must be identified and the whole system must be managed with this in mind. One of the most commonly ignored relationships in planning is the relationship between capacity utilisation, variability and lead times. Factory Physics explores this fundamental relationship and demonstrate the damaging impact of and solutions for variability, outages, and capacity constraints. As such, Factory Physics provides a powerful tool to reduce lead times effectively.

Day 5: Lean Basics – 25/04/2012
Lean fundamentals. Due to the pressure on costs, many companies are focused internally on cost optimalization. The « Lean » thinking and associated concepts, such as Kaizen, Kanban, Just-In-Time, 5S, Value Stream Mapping … are indispensable in the journey to Operations Excellence. The application of lean not only extends to production but also to logistics and administration.

Dinsdag 06 maart 2012
Archipel Business Centre
Tramstraat 61
9052 Zwijnaarde (Gent)

Programma
12.00 Ontvangst en broodjeslunch
13.00 Introductie, Gunther Fonteyne – Partner Xeleos HealthCare
13.15 Case Jan Portaels. Frank Deckmyn – Director Facility Department
14.15 Koffiepauze
14.45 Case OLV Aalst, Mark Drieghe – Aankoopdirecteur
15.15 Case St-Erasmus, Luc Knaepkens – Operationeel Directeur
15.45 Introductie Debat, Jan Van Craenendonck – Operationeel Directeur ZNA Sint-Elisabeth – ZNA Joostens – ZNA Hoge Beuken
16.00 Paneldebat
17.00 Netwerk cocktail

Prijs
€ 95 voor PICS, € 145 voor niet leden
